When the bell rings for the third period on Mondays and Thursdays, the Normal Technical pupils would excitedly head to various venues in school to attend lessons. While the rest of the school works on their own subjects, the NT pupils would be learning new dance steps, creating beautiful fashion accessories, putting clips and photos to make a short video, moulding work of arts and styling hair etc.
Since the start of 2005, OPSS has embarked into a new journey where the teaching of life skills becomes part of the NT curriculum. Pupils sign up for modules which are conducted during curriculum time where they get to choose the skills which they want to learn Each module lasts about ten to twelve weeks depending on the semester. There are no formal assessments but their works, crafts and/or performances on stage would be tes timony enough to show others what they have learnt.
These modules have not only helped to engage the pupils in meaningful and practical ways, but it has also open up avenues in which they can serve the school, for example, decorating the school hall with big bouquets of flowers during speech day, providing make up services for the performers, and even putting up performances themselves.
It has been an exciting journey for them and for the school. Here in OPSS, we hope that at the end of their four years, the NT pupils would have learnt many new skills and found something they can be good at and pursue it with their passion. Who says school is boring? Not so in Orchid Park Secondary School. |
