Department Challenges & Strategies
The Humanities Department in Orchid Park Secondary School is made up of 4 units ; History, Geography, Social Studies and Principles of Accounts. These humanities subjects have often not been well-received by students in neighbourhood schools. This stems in part from the perception among many of the pupils that these subjects are not relevant to their lives, difficult to understand and do not help them to gain admission into many courses in the polytechnics. As a department, we try to correct these misconceptions and thereby motivate our pupils by
- showing them the links between the subject matter and events in their daily lives
- showing them carefully selected visual resources to bring the subjects alive
- simplifying the teaching of both content and skills
- allowing them to experience real and meaningful success through carefully constructed test and examination papers
The pupils are also given opportunities to go on field trips to widen their understanding of the subject matter. Thus, the teaching of these subjects is not just classroom-bound.
