The mission of the English Language and Literature Department is to nurture confident and competent users of the English Language.
In our effort to establish a reading culture amongst pupils, we have put in place the Extensive Reading and Information Literacy Programme (ERIL). Our multi-pronged approach comprises: the Class Readers’ Scheme, Intensive Reading Programme and subscription to newspapers and monthly periodicals. Through ERIL, we aim not only to develop pupils' proficiency in the English Language but also to encourage them to be well-informed on current issues.
Incorporated into our programme are also activities that provide opportunities for pupils to communicate verbally, viz pair work, group work, presentations and debates in order to nurture confident and fluent speakers of the language. In recognition of the increasing emphasis on oral communication, this year the department organised the EL Oracy Week, where there was special emphasis on listening and oral activities to promote the use of good English amongst pupils. |
